If your home is historic, the most important question for any Christmas light contractor is what they fasten to and how. A contractor who reaches for a staple gun on painted Victorian trim will do damage that outlasts the season by years.
Ask directly: clips or staples? Anything driven into masonry? The right answer is clips only, nothing penetrating. How to choose a Christmas light company covers the rest of the checklist.
Century-old homes bring constraints newer construction does not — limited exterior outlets, older circuits, fragile trim, and roofs whose condition is not obvious from the ground.
Ask whether a contractor has worked historic properties in the Fox Valley and how they plan power on a house that predates outdoor receptacles. We have done this in Batavia, Geneva, and St. Charles since 2007. See our gallery.
Older homes bring a genuine electrical question that a contractor should raise before you do. Many century homes here have limited exterior receptacles, sometimes on shared interior circuits, and adding a full display can trip a breaker nightly. The correct answer is to plan the load and distribute across circuits, and occasionally to recommend an electrician add an exterior receptacle. A contractor who does not mention this has not thought about your house.
General liability and workers compensation certificates should be produced on request. Ask too whether installers are employees or seasonal labor, because on a steep Victorian roof that distinction affects both the quality of the work and where liability sits.
Our crews are trained employees carrying full coverage. Downtown commercial clients require documentation as standard. Vetting a commercial lighting company goes further.
Ask about experience with the specific building type, not just historic property generally. A contractor comfortable on a wood-frame Victorian may have no experience with limestone at all, and the mounting approaches are not transferable. Batavia has both within a few blocks, so the question is worth being precise about. We work both regularly and will tell you plainly if a design you have in mind cannot be executed safely on your particular facade.
Design, product, installation, in-season repairs, January takedown, and off-season storage in a single fixed written number, agreed before work starts.
