On most Northbrook properties, hanging lights on the house is only part of the job. The mature oaks that define these lots do more visual work than the roofline does, and lighting them is the single biggest technical difference between a Northbrook display and a standard suburban one.
Wrapping a mature trunk evenly requires far more strand than people estimate and a technique that keeps spacing consistent as the trunk tapers. Canopy work requires a lift. Neither is achievable from a homeowner’s ladder, which is why most Northbrook displays that were attempted DIY stop at the gutter line.
Northbrook’s ravines and grade changes complicate equipment positioning in a way flat lots never do. A lift needs stable, level footing, and finding it on a sloped wooded lot is a planning problem best solved before install day rather than during it.
We scope access during the consultation, identify staging positions, and plan the sequence so crews are not repositioning equipment repeatedly. That is most of why our installs finish when we say they will.
Everything on the structure mounts with clips — shingle clips at the roof edge, gutter clips on the lip, purpose-made hardware around windows and columns. No staples, no nails, no adhesive.
Staples pierce the wire jacket and let moisture into the strand, which is why stapled displays fail mid-season. Nails split fascia. On the custom homes common in Northbrook, that kind of damage is expensive to put right. Read our guidance on hanging lights safely.
Tree health is a real consideration on these lots. Wrapping a trunk too tightly, or leaving a wrap on year-round, can girdle a young tree as it grows. On mature oaks it is less of a risk, but we still wrap to a tension that allows movement and we remove everything in January rather than leaving it up. A company that offers to leave tree wraps on permanently to save on next year’s install is not doing you a favour.
Running power two hundred feet to a specimen oak is not an extension cord problem. It needs outdoor-rated distribution, correct load planning across circuits, and routing that stays invisible. We work that out during design so the display comes on cleanly every evening on a timer.
